Subject: Ride the Rails

Body: Ride the Rails as Timber Heritage Association offers speeder rides on its historic Arcata & Mad River Railroad crew speeder. On Saturdays, June 26, July 24, August 7, August 28 and September 25, rides will depart from near the Samoa Cookhouse on NCRA rails from Samoa to near Manila. On these fourth Saturdays, people are welcome to come and walk through the Samoa shops and see the THA collection of timber history that includes a historic, circa 1895, roundhouse full of steam locomotives. The round trip is about 20 - 25 minutes long and will pass a number of historic timber related sites. Seating has been increased to 25 with the addition of a trailer car and reservations are neccesary. The rides will begin at 9 am, leaving every 1/2 hour, with the last ride at 4:00pm. Link to schedule and reservations or call 707 442-3073 for more info. Tickets cost $7 - adults and $4 - children accompanied by an adult - $6 for seniors. August 7th will offer a longer ride along the Hwy 101 corridor, rates will change for this ride. Guests may also tour the historic Samoa Roundhouse and see a collection of logging locomotives. Background history: Each speeder was used to bring crews and tools to work sites, for fire suppression, and to bring injured workers back from the woods. They are called speeders since they could be started up and run immediately on the tracks. The steam engine of their time took three or more hours to fire up and a trained crew to operate. The speeders were simple for anyone to operate and always available.

Roller derby is a competitive full contact sport played on quad roller skates. In it's current movement, roller derby is an all female sport. Roller derby competitions are held at the Redwood Acres Fairgrounds.
