Overdraft Protection

Everyone handles their checking account differently - that's why Coast Central Credit Union offers different options for overdraft protection. Compare your options below if you're not sure which is right for you.

Automatic Transfer from Another Account
You can designate another sub-account (or up to four) as overdraft protection account(s), which will enable automatic transfers to your checking account when necessary. A fee of $5.00 is charged each time such a transfer needs to be made, but transfers are made in increments of $100 when possible to prevent multiple charges. Your transactions will go through as long as you have sufficient funds in any designated overdraft protection account.

Courtesy Pay Overdraft Protection
After having a checking account with us for some time, you may qualify for our Courtesy Pay Overdraft Protection services. With this service, when an overdraft occurs, our system will check all of your designated overdraft protection accounts as usual. But, if sufficient funds aren't present in any of those accounts, Courtesy Pay allows your transactions (including fees) to clear up to a $800 limit ($1,500 for business accounts). There is a $26.00 fee for each transaction Courtesy Pay must cover.

This can be especially helpful for check overdrafts, since the charge for a bounced check is also $26.00. Merchant fees for returned checks can also be quite high. With Courtesy Pay you'll only worry about repaying Coast Central, saving you the time and trouble of repaying and explaining the situation to each check's payee. Provided that you remain within your Courtesy Pay limit, your checks will also clear the first time they're submitted, thereby preventing multiple charges for the same check.

Courtesy Pay allows your checks and other debits to clear until you have time to get your affairs back in order, preventing the inconvenience and embarrassment of bounced checks or declined card transactions.

If you are primarily a debit card user, Courtesy Pay still protects you in the same ways, but please be advised that debit transactions can rack up overdraft charges quickly. Several small overdrafts will incur several fees, so when using Courtesy Pay, one should attempt to avoid small transactions. If you tend not to write down your transactions regularly, you may prefer to opt out of Courtesy Pay.

No Protection
If you prefer to have transactions declined if you don't have sufficient funds (without trying other accounts), you may elect not to have any overdraft protection at all. This prevents overdraft transfers and some overdraft charges, but certain debit transactions may still clear, and checks will still bounce if there are insufficient funds in your account. Keeping track of all your transactions is always recommended to prevent unexpected charges.

See our Overdraft Support section for more detailed information on overdrafts and how to prevent them.
