Recently, researchers have discovered an issue with a popular encryption product known as OpenSSL. This software is used on many websites to ensure two things: 1) when you connect to (for example) coastccu.org, you’re actually connecting to us (and not someone that’s pretending to be us); and 2) nobody is “listening in” on what you’re doing. Because of how important this software is, you can understand why the security community is so concerned. After much testing, we have determined that our websites, online banking, and mobile banking are not (and were not) affected by this bug. We have also worked with our various vendors to make sure that they were not impacted either. Your information is secure.
While your information (password, account information, etc) were not affected by this flaw, now is a good time to review some important security measures you can take to protect yourself online.
Change your passwords.
Even though Coast Central’s systems were not affected and your passwords were not exposed, it’s good practice to regularly change your password. Now, while it’s on your mind, would be a good time to change them.
Don’t use the same password on multiple sites.
This is hard to do, because we all have so many different websites we use. However, if you use the same password on another site that you use for Coast Central, it’s possible that someone could still have that password. If you have trouble keeping all your login information organized (and who doesn’t!), there are password managers such as LastPass that can organize and protect your passwords for you.
Use MultiFactor Authentication.
Many sites offer what’s known as MultiFactor Authentication. If you’ve had to get a phone call (or text, or an email) while logging into your online banking, you have seen an example of MultiFactor Authentication. This adds another layer of protection to your account: if someone was able to guess your password, they still wouldn’t be able to log in. While Coast Central has this powerful feature turned on for everybody, some sites have it as an option. Check with them to see how to enable it.
